Matthew became interested in FinTech while working in the legal department of Venmo, where he helped the company apply for money transmitter licenses. The following year he submitted comments to the original draft of the BitLicense, which was similar in many ways to the NY Money Transmitter License. Ever since, he has been involved in the cryptocurrency industry, focusing on the laws and regulations affecting digital assets and related companies.
Matthew is the General Counsel at Reserve and leads the project's regulatory strategy and serves as the main point of contact for everything legal. Before Reserve, he co-founded and served as General Counsel and Senior Analyst at Digital Asset Research, an independent cryptocurrency research firm for institutional investors. Prior to DAR, he was an Associate in the alternative investments practice group at Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy and an Associate at Promontory Financial Group.
He presents regularly on the legal and compliance issues surrounding financial technology companies, with an emphasis on topics related to cryptocurrencies. He has been quoted in several publications, including the Wall Street Journal, U.S. News, L.A. Times, and CoinDesk.
